Market Preview: Robust US economy to weather the storm

The US economy managed a remarkably robust performance in the third quarter in spite of the enormous damage caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Consumer confidence declined sharply in September, hardly surprising post-Katrina, and there much uncertainty surrounding October’s data, due on Tuesday. The consensus forecast suggests confidence should rebound but HSBC expects a further decline in consumer sentiment due to high natural gas and gasoline prices.
