"Progressive bluegrass" has the same unlikely ring as funky Morris dancing or freeform bubblegum pop. But it exists, and the Punch Brothers are among its foremost practitioners.

Led by the mandolinist Chris Thile, formerly of the hit acoustic band Nickel Creek, the five clean-cut young Americans treat traditional bluegrass as an infinitely elastic musical form.
