Chirac rebukes Sarkozy over ‘lax sentencing’ claim

French president Jacques Chirac on Friday rebuked Nicolas Sarkozy, his rebellious interior minister and likely successor, for blaming a rise in youth crime on lax sentencing by judges.

The latest public disagreement between the two men, following an earlier spat over Franco-US relations, raises doubts about how long Mr Sarkozy will stay in the government.
