Latvian poll threat after rioting

Latvia’s president threatened on Wednesday to call early elections after anti-government protests led to the Baltic country’s worst rioting since independence in 1991.

The demonstrations raise doubts over whether Latvia’s unpopular government is strong enough to implement the painful austerity plan agreed with the International Monetary Fund last month to defend the lat’s exchange rate peg to the euro.
