On Sunday evening Bill Gates, Microsoft’s chairman, will kick off the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas – the most prestigious on the circuit – with his customary eve-of-show address.

No doubt he will use the opportunity to tout the virtues of the Windows Vista operating system, due to be launched to consumers at the end of this month, and the latest version of Microsoft Office.
