Analysis: Banks tighten the screw over lending

The one factor holding back the real estate markets from any meaningful recovery is the lack of easily available bank debt, exacerbating an already damaging cyclical downturn in property prices over the past year.

The cheap and plentiful debt available to the real estate sector fuelled the investment boom for many years up to last summer, but this came to a crashing halt when the credit crisis began in August.
