Merkel supports proposals for ban on smoking in public areas

One of Europe's last havens for smokers may be about to fall after Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, yesterday backed plans for a smoking ban in public spaces now being hatched by parliament.

Ulrich Wilhelm, her spokesman, said the chancellor, a reformed smoker who has banned cigarettes, cigars and pipes from cabinet meetings, supported calls by one of her ministers to prohibit smoking in hospitals, airports, trains, stations and restaurants.
