US retail sales post unexpected rise

US retail sales unexpectedly grew in August, as sales of automobiles were better than feared and lower petrol prices encouraged consumers to spend.

Economists had expected sales to fall by 0.1 per cent month-on-month, but in fact they rose by 0.2 per cent, after 1.4 per cent jump in July, a report from the Commerce Department said.
