Businesses guilty of environmental crimes

Small to medium-sized companies are responsible for 80 per cent of environmental crimes, and are getting away with it because the government's top pollution agency has insufficient resources to catch and punish them.

The Environment Agency, the government body set up to deal with such problems, lacked the funds necessary to tackle pollution and more effective law enforcement was needed, according to a report yesterday by the House of Commons environmental audit committee.
