FSA owns up to Rock failings

The City watchdog was forced to admit on Tuesday that its monitoring of the troubled Northern Rock bank was inadequate as its top executives faced a grilling by MPs that further exposed cracks in regulation of Britain’s financial system.

The admission by the Financial Services Authority came as the Treasury helped smooth the way for a potential takeover of Northern Rock by extending to new accounts its guarantee of the troubled bank’s depositors.
