Health workers have overwhelmingly backed an improved pay offer reducing the threat of widespread industrial action this winter.

Unions representing 1m local government, civil service, prison and postal workers are threatening to strike over a series of disputes over pay and jobs. The TUC annual conference this week backed calls to co-ordinate industrial action in a bid to cause maximum embarrassment for Gordon Brown.
