Congo violence displaces 800,000

Rape, looting and the use of forced labour are surging in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo as civilians are caught in a cycle of violence that has intensified in recent months, according to research by Oxfam.

A survey of local communities by the aid agency, released on Tuesday, found that civilians were being targeted by both sides after an anti-rebel offensive in January and February triggered retaliation by rebels.
