Toyota plans to increase the price of domestic cars and trucks for the first time in 16 years to offset the soaring cost of steel and other raw materials.
The decision by Japan’s biggest carmaker highlights the way that commodity prices are squeezing the industry as well as reshaping drivers’ preferences. The sharpest rises will apply to petrol-electric hybrids, including the Prius, which are in demand because of surging fuel costs.
