Banks lead a partial fightback

After a volatile week, European shares rallied sharply yesterday, mirroring gains on Wall Street, as hopes for an amended US rescue plan injected optimism into the battered banking sector.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 leapt 3 per cent to 1,089.38, but stocks were still down 1.4 per cent on the week.
