Gloomy economic data bring investors back down to earth

Wall Street stocks slid yesterday as investors took profits following the historic US presidential election win by Barack Obama and attention turned back to a troubled economy.

The market gave back the previous session's gains, when the prospect of a clear presidential winner had helped lift equities to their highest level in three weeks.
