Bhutto placed under house arrest

Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s opposition leader, was put under house arrest for a week on Monday as the Commonwealth threatened to suspend the country’s membership unless President Pervez Musharraf lifted emergency rule.

Earlier, Ms Bhutto, the former premier, had suspended talks with General Musharraf in protest at his imposition of a state of emergency on November 3.
