Congressional leaders reached a compromise on an economic stimulus bill pushed by President Barack Obama on Wednesday, reining in spending increases and tax cuts in order to retain the support of moderate Republicans in the Senate.

Leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate met on Wednesday night to finalise a settlement, having reduced the overall size of the bill to $789bn (€614bn, £550bn) – smaller than either the existing House or Senate version.
