Food companies told to check for chemical after US pet deaths

Food and feed companies have been asked to check for the presence of a potentially lethal industrial chemical in their products amid concerns it could have entered the global food chain after causing the deaths of pets in the US.

The Food Standards Agency yesterday said the UK, along with other European states, had received a letter from the European Commission asking it to look for any evidence of melamine in wheat glutens and rice proteins, particularly those imported from China.
