European shares hit their highest level in almost nine months this week as buoyant telecommunications and banking shares offset tumbles from energy and airline companies.

Telecoms groups’ interim results showed that the sector had fared better than many analysts had expected through the economic downturn. Encouraging numbers were reported by France Telecom, Telefónica and BT of the UK.
