‘Don’t panic’ plea to Labour MPs

Labour’s bruised backbenchers were issued with a “Don’t panic” message on Wednesday as they headed home for Christmas in despondent mood after weeks of disastrous headlines and self-inflicted wounds.

Gordon Brown insisted the government had a firm grip on the economy and said that “many of the things that have been written in the last few weeks will be quickly forgotten”.
