Kenneth Clarke is ready to return to frontline politics if asked by David Cameron after a Conservative election victory to beef up what would be one of the most inexperienced ministerial line-ups ever assembled.

Mr Clarke’s colleagues say the former chancellor has earned enough from various directorships and still has the energy and enthusiasm for ministerial office.
