Developers enter budget housing market

Low-income housing in Egypt usually comes in the form of shabby tenements regardless of whether the developer is the state or a private individual building in the unplanned and heaving slums that are now home to half the population.

But Haram City, the first large budget-housing project by a private real estate company in Egypt, presents a different picture. Conceived as an integrated community with a school, clinic, workshops and retail and entertainment areas, Haram City also boasts green spaces and neat rows of pleasant two-storey blocks.
