Banking: Credit crisis and bad loans pose challenges

Polish banks have survived the initial wave of the global financial crisis. Now they face serious challenges managing their businesses as they emerge from the turmoil.

They are benefiting from the good financial health in which many, though not all, went into the upheavals of the past 15 months. But, with most of the sector controlled by west European parent groups, the Polish banks’ future depends crucially on Europe-wide conditions, which remain difficult.
