Venezuela’s opposition was on Monday celebrating its first big victory after knocking back President Hugo Chávez’s efforts to make radical changes to the country’s constitution.

Its 51-49 percentage point triumph in Sunday’s referendum was the nationalist leader’s first electoral defeat since coming to office in 1999 and occurred only a year after voters gave him another six years in the post.
