Bernard Matthews was facing fresh difficulties on Friday night after an official report uncovered a series of hygiene lapses at its Suffolk poultry plant where the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus broke out this month.
The report came as the company confirmed publicly for the first time that it had suffered a 40 per cent drop in sales of some of its poultry products since early February when 159,000 of its turkeys were culled.
