Samsung Electronics is seeking to become a bigger player in the fast-growing smartphone market by giving independent developers the tools to devise software applications for its handsets.

The world's second-largest handset maker will today unveil "bada", the South Korean company's new mobile platform, for which software developers can produce applications.
