Property shares slide on fear of rights issue failures

About £850m was wiped off the value of property stocks on Tuesday as investors feared that companies may not be able to raise the money needed to prevent them breaching debt covenants.

The UK real estate sector dropped 7 per cent – taking it down by more than a third over the past six weeks – on fears over the ability and appetite of shareholders to support forthcoming rights issues, exacerbated by short selling in certain companies.
