Snapshots: Open markets feel greater strain

As one of Africa’s more open and sophisticated economies, Kenya has been hit on several fronts, as the global downturn undermines the engines of its growth: tourism, horticulture, agriculture and remittances.

The effects of falling consumption in the west are already being felt but, because Kenya has not yet seen large-scale job losses or corporate failures, many economists say the worst is probably still to come.
