Union deal offers a lifeline to Alitalia

Last-ditch negotiations to save Alitalia from bankruptcy took an important step forward yesterday when CIGL, the main left-wing union, signed an agreement accepting the business plan proposed by an Italian take-over consortium.

Talks mediated by the government were continuing in an effort to gain the consent of unions representing pilots and flight assistants.
