Senate head invited to form interim government

Giorgio Napolitano, Italy's president, yesterday sought to break the deadlock following the collapse of the -centre-left government by asking Franco Marini, speaker of the Senate, to "explore" the possibility of forming an interim government to change the voting system before elections.

Mr Marini accepted what he called a very grave task. He said time was pressing.
