Ukraine plunged deeper into political crisis on Tuesday after Viktor Yushchenko, president, failed to win parliamentary backing for his nominee for prime minister.

Despite an impassioned speech to parliament, Mr Yushchenko came up three votes short of the majority needed to confirm Yuri Yekhanurov, a regional governor.
