Sonova, the Swiss hearing aid manufacturer, on Monday consolidated its market leadership with an agreed $489m cash offer for Advanced Bionics Corporation of the US.

The bid follows the attempt three years ago by Switzerland-based Sonova, then trading under its brand name of Phonak, to acquire ReSound of Denmark. The deal, which was worth DKr15.5bn (equivalent to SFr3.3bn at the time) collapsed in August 2007 after objections from the German cartel authority.
