Opening enthusiasm cools down at close

Asian stock markets staged a broad-based rally yesterday amid optimism about further US interest rate cuts, although early buying enthusiasm trailed off as trading drew to a close.

Tokyo led the region higher as a batch of economic figures sprang no nasty surprises on investors already nervous about the possibility of a recession in Japan.
