Few issues can divide Liverpool like football. Plans by Everton, Merseyside’s oldest club, to move out of the city boundary to neighbouring Knowsley have unleashed an old-fashioned slanging match between rival councils.
The club says it needs a new 50,000-seater stadium to ensure it can continue to compete in the Premier League and there is no site acceptable near its 40,000-capacity Goodison Park home. The only way it can afford to build it is teaming up with Tesco, the supermarket chain, as part of a wider plan to regenerate Kirkby, north-east of the city.
