Immigration service remedies are 'two years away'

Concern about the flawed state of the immigration service resurfaced yesterday when its head told disgruntled MPs that she had few reliable figures to give them and it would take at least two years to get her department working properly.

Lin Homer, head of the Home Office's Immigration and Nationality Directorate, refused to give detailed figures about the number of bail applications made by serious offenders, and how many of these had been turned down.
