Downing Street attempted to play down reports on Monday that Tony Blair is planning to leave parliament at the next general election.

Mr Blair has already said he will not fight the next election – due before May 2010 – as Labour leader. He has insisted he intends to serve a full third term as prime minister, although most MPs expect him to make way for Gordon Brown, the chancellor, welbefore the end of the parliament.
