Warm weather softens US retail forecasts

A dozen leading US retailers lowered their earnings forecasts on Thursday after unseasonably warm weather combined with the continuing housing market slump to slow September store sales.

Retail Metrics, which tracks the monthly figures, said its sales index for September rose just 1.6 per cent, against analysts’ forecasts of 2.3 per cent, and that all segments of the industry had been hit.
