Sudden impact

When Matt Hampson awoke from a fortnight under sedation, he was consumed with panic. He could no longer feel his arms or legs. Two weeks earlier, the Under 21 England prop had been about to pack down during a practice session ahead of that weekend’s clash with Scotland.

“It had been a pretty ordinary morning,” recalls Hampson. “We had already done quite a bit of scrumming against the [scrum] machine and then we progressed into a proper live scrum session against each other. It was probably one of the last scrums of the day. The referee yelled, ‘Engage!’ and then – nothing. That was it.”
