Sir John Gieve, the former deputy governor of the Bank of England, argues on Tuesday that the monetary policy committee should surrender its sole control over economic management.

The former Bank and Treasury official does not go so far as to recommend the MPC should lose its formal independence but indicates that monetary policy failed in the run-up to the financial and economic crisis.
