Falling financials depress bourses

European equity markets fell on Tuesday as financial stocks slid amid signs investors may be feeling the new year rally had - for the moment - gone far enough.

In spite of a healthy rise in German business confidence recorded by the country’s ZEW institute, stock markets paused as profits were taken in the sectors which have recorded the strongest recent gains, namely financials and London-listed mining stocks.
