Microsoft and Cisco seek to reassure clients

The chief executive officers of Microsoft and Cisco on Monday launched an unusual public campaign to try to head off concerns that a new era of head-to-head competition between their companies will hamper development of some of the biggest new technology markets.

The effort came as Microsoft prepares for an attack on the “unified communications” market, which brings together voice, e-mail and instant messaging, putting it in more direct competition with Cisco.
