Benettons retreat on Generali vote battle

The Benettons were forced by regulators into an embarrassing climbdown on Monday and effectively withdrew their candidate for internal elections at insurer Generali.

The Italian textile family was rebuked strongly on Friday by Consob, Italy’s market regulator, in a dispute over rules governing shareholder votes. The Benettons have been promoting themselves as minority shareholders in Generali and promoting a candidate for the insurer’s audit committee.
