A long record in building retail businesses, charity work and publicly battling against Parkinson's disease led to Sir David Jones being named as one of the few City figures in the latest New Year's honours list, writes Michael Kavanagh .

The gregarious rugby nut's 2006 autobiography Next to me: Luck, Leadership and Living with Parkinson's was endorsed by figures ranging from Michael J. Fox to Sir Philip Green.
