Influx of workers from new EU states

More than 400,000 east Europeans have been registered to work in Britain since 2004, vastly exceeding predictions and fuelling calls for limits on future migrants.

Applications from just under 50,000 eastern Europeans alone were approved during the three months to the end of June, according to Home Office statistics published on Tuesday.
