Hundreds of thousands of people – chiefly women – are to be allowed to buy an additional six years of national insurance contributions to boost their state pensions.

Low-paid women, and those with a broken work record from caring for children, relatives or illness will benefit from the deal, which was welcomed on Friday by pensioner groups and Baroness Hollis, the former Labour pensions minister, who campaigned for the change.
