Fate sealed after five banks rejected rescue

Bradford & Bingley’s fate was sealed on Saturday morning at just after 11.15am as Alistair Darling, chancellor confronted some of Britain’s leading bankers with an unpalatable choice.

Either the five banks represented – Barclays, Lloyds TSB, RBS, HBOS and Abbey Santander – joined together to rescue Bradford & Bingley, or the struggling mortgage lender would be nationalised and the whole banking sector could be left with the bill.
