BNP Paribas set to take control of Fortis

BNP Paribas is set to take control of Fortis Bank after a deal was struck late Friday between the French banking group and the Belgian government.

The new agreement – part of a protracted settlement for the stricken Belgian group – will have to be ratified by shareholders of Fortis Holding, the bank’s erstwhile parent whose shareholders recently rejected a similar agreement with BNP in an attempt to get better terms.
