Consumers rein in spending habits

Consumer spending on a range of items, from financial services to drinks in pubs and meals in restaurants, fell sharply in September as households reacted to mounting pressure on their budgets, according to the latest Bank of England agents’ survey.

The Bank’s agents around the country reported that consumer spending was at its weakest level since the Bank launched its monthly surveys in 1997.
