Tabcorp suffers gaming setback

Tabcorp, Australia's biggest gaming company, yesterday reported the first loss in its 14-year history following a substantial writedown in the value of its licence to operate slot machines in the state of Victoria.

The company said there had been a fall-off in gambling as tougher econ-omic conditions hit the spending power of Australians, who are among the world's heaviest gamblers.
