AIG posts $15bn of writedowns

American International Group on Thursday night joined the list of the biggest losers from the credit crisis by announcing almost $15bn of writedowns and losses related to subprime mortgage exposure.

The pre-tax charges drove the insurer to a net loss of $5.29bn in the fourth quarter, cutting full-year earnings by more than half to $6.2bn.
